TCNJ’s Center for Sensory & Complex Disabilities (USA)
is proud to announce a newly formed partnership with the Demonstration School for the Deaf, Mampong-Akuapem Ghana, West Africa
In January, 2018, a group of students traveled with Dr. Jerry G. Petroff (aka Jerry) to Ghana, West Africa to study the education of children with disabilities within Ghana. During this journey, they visited the Demonstration School for the Deaf near the capital city of Accra. The school is host to over 400 students who are deaf including a dozen or more students who are deafblind. During this visit, Dr. Petroff and his students interacted with amazing teachers, dedicated administrators and curious students of all ages. However, they were struck by the stark differences in special education supports and services between the United States and Ghana. What the school had in spirit and talent, it lacked in up-to-date equipment, materials and supplies. A seemingly depressed economy and diminishing outside funding has resulted in a tremendous need for assistance. The pandemic has just further impacted on the schools resources and more than ever they are in need of our help. The motto of the Center has always been, “If not us, who?”.
