DEPARTMENT/CENTRE FOR DEAF-BLIND CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Deafblind Department is a unique department in the School which was established 1978. The department currently has a student population of fourteen (14) made up of seven (7) boys and seven (7) girl. Two (2) of the Deaf Blind children are in wheelchair as well. Education for the Deafblind is individualized due to dual sensory loss.

The Centre has trained and graduated many Deafblind students. Notable among them is Sylvia Peprah, who graduated, went through the Integration System is now at the University of Education, Winneba. She is currently pursuing her degree in Rehabilitation and Disability. . The programs of the department are early and functional Academics, which include functional English, mathematics, Science, social studies. Pre vocational and vocational skills daily living skills, social skills, language and communication, arts and crafts etc.

KINDERGARTEN (KG) DEPARTMENT

The total population of children in our KG is seventy nine, their ages range from four (4) to eight (8) years made up of Twenty nine (29) boys and Fifteen (15) girls. KG is two years.

The programs at the Kindergarten include:

  1.  language and literacy

  2. Environmental studies

  3. Mathematics/science and technology

  4. Creative Art

  5. Music drama and dance

  6. Physical development

  7. Psychosocial skills which cuts across all areas.

Since Kindergarten children learn by doing they need more facilities such as playgrounds, playrooms, bigger classrooms, musical instruments, materials for arts and craft, toys and picture books for their own library.

JUNIOR HIGH  (JHS) DEPARTMENT

Junior High Department: the current population of students in this department are one hundred and twenty (120) made up of Seventy (70) males and Fifty (50) females. The duration of the Junior High education in deaf schools is four (4) years instead of three (3) years in regular schools.

Students write BECE thus Basis Education Certificate Exams. They write the same exams as the regular junior high school in Ghana after which they proceed to the Senior High School (SHS) if they make the grade others also enroll in the Vocational Department.

PRIMARY DEPARTMENT

The primary department is divided into two thus the lower primary and the upper primary. The children in this department ages range from six to fifteen depending on how early they started schooling. The total population of the primary department is one hundred and fifty six (201) made up of One hundred thirty-two (132) boys and Sixty nine (69) girls. Primary education is six years in Ghana.
